We have been thinking about setting up a podcast/internet radio station for here in the U.S. As we are novices when it comes to this type of thing, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Homesteading and organic gardening is quickly becoming a strong movement. With factory farming and contaminated veggies becoming the norm, people are starting to think about what they are eating and how they can grow thier own foods to feed thier children.

Cheers

Bob

A podcast is reasonably easy to produce and publish.

You need:

Means to record audio (a computer and a microphone as basics)
A website
Some know how

I would suggest trying to record some mp3 audio first and then look at using something like  Blogger  to publish a blog and  Feedburner  to publish the podcast feed.

Libsyn  provide websites for many podcasters.

Podcast 411  have some useful links.

Good luck.

Also listen to lots of podcasts as it is good to work out what you like and what you don't like and will give you an idea of what you want to do (or definitely not do).

ACL's Rural Radio is a good example of a slickly produced "magazine style" podcast and  Geek.Farm.Life  is a good example of a more of a "chat show" style podcast.

And Matt forgot to mention his own podcast  http://www.downshiftme.com

Bob- I got a lap top just over a year ago for a Christmas pressie

It had a built in mic which I started to play with just having fun learning how to record a voice

I then pulled a plug in mic of something we had lying around here....just something that cost a few dollars and plugged it into the lap top (a PC mic would do the same job)

I learnt how to save files.

Many years ago we had bought some software called Sony Vegas for DVCam editing and it does a marvellous job on audio too so I started playing with that. matt has told me that there is software called audacity that is free that can be used for mixing audio files too

I started recording short pieces of audio and the mixing that with background music that I had purchased cheaply that was royalty free music and could be used without cost commercially

Within weeks of getting my lap top I had produced ou first ACL Rural Radio Podcast and that was without any experience whatsoever- learnt from scratch

All my podcasts are made of are short audio snippets sent to me by e-mail and of course recorded by myself and mixed together here on my lap top...I wish I could do one with someone else here as I feel this would be more natural but thats not possible for me but I do the next best thing and mix interviews together as best I can.....I even lay over a continuous back ground sound and match the volume levels so each voice sounds prety well matched....if you listen to Rural Radio podcast 1 you will see how different that is to number 7...its just takes practise and perseverance

I love doing it- its given me incredible enjoyment however it is VERY time consuming if you have to mix and match in so many little audio files like I do. If you can produce a podcast where your guests are present with you it would be quicker and you'd probably get that nice natural banter that goes on when you are with friends

Good Luck

Thanks for all the great information. I think I will do just as you recommend. Just start recording a few things and work out the bugs. I am retired and between taking care of the animals and handleing the veggie plot, I pretty much have a lot of time. My wife on the other hand probably would tell you another story. Between me and the 3 children she says she has a full time job.

Cheers
