I wish I could do fairisle - I am very tempted to try. I did try about 20 years ago but tended to pull the threads not being knitted, (those being looped or woven in the back) too tight. Not very successful.

I am fine on the complicated cable stuff.

I think most people learn when they are young. I was lucky enough to have a mum that did knitting, crochet and sewing so I learned all three. Made my first dress when I was seven - I think mum gave the material to me and said stitch from hear to hear though!

Carol, as you only live in the next department, if you want to come over for some lessons I would be more than willing to help. I know it is probably quite a long drive but a couple of session would probably get you going, its really not that difficult.

Forgot to mention quick method for sewing up.

I used to hate doing it, it would take for ever. Since ages ago I took to doing it on my sewing machine. Simply press all the pieces to shape, paying particular attention to the edges, careful not to stretch them, but get them nice and flat. Pin right-sides together. Then using a matching cotton thread and a large zigzag stitch, sew up on the machine. Works fine. And its quick.

Cathouse - thanks for your generous offer - might take you up on that when the weather breaks! (sorry didn't spot it sooner)

I like the suggestion of sewing up by machine. I would like to make some tea cosies, coffee pot warmers and hot water bottle covers when I find suitable patterns.
