these are those 3 pronged things they used on Tales From the Green Valley. Well, mrs m bought me on for my bathday and I got a chance this morning to use it in anger. I got some odd comments from the allotment old guard, but I have to say that it was an extremely effective tool. So much so that I "turned over" a twenty by 5 ft bed in about half the time it would've taken me with spade and fork. And it has the added advantage of not turning over the soil (just breaking it up) so all the warmth and nutrients are still in the first 6" or so, right where the plants need them.
I'd go as far as saying it will probably replace my fork as the main digging tool.

That sounds a useful bit of kit, Mike. My favourite tool is my Swoe - Wilkinson Sword streamlined hoe with go-faster stripes (not really). It's lightweight and a pleasure to use.

is that one of those sort of flat golf club things? I've seen people using them, and they look very good. Much more efficient than the old style push hoe.

I've had one of those for years. I love it as the handle is quite long and slightly shaped.

The three pronged tools are known as krooms hereabouts, and I believe they were called that in Symours books too.
I have a Canterbury hoe and it has a single large flat head. You use it pickaxe style and it is brilliant for clearing rough ground, and great for earthing up spuds
