Like everyone, I am trying to make a meagre living from smallholding. I am thinking about turning 3 acres over to hens. Each acre is fenced off so I could do a good rotation. Does anyone have a rough idea of how many hens to an acre and is there a loose equation so that I can make an educated guess as to how much I can make before I start. Yes, I know it is a lot to ask but can anyone give me any advice please? Also I think that you need to be registered if you have so many hens, do you have to have any special conditions and is it costly? I like to let them free range and am thinking possibly about ex batteries as I have had them before and enjoyed watching them recover and whilst I need to make money, I want to get some job satisfaction too. Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Spinningjenny,
From memory, you have to register if you have more than 50 hens and you would also need to register as a packing station if you do anything other than farm gate sales of ungraded eggs (for size). I believe you can only sell clean eggs that haven't been washed as well, so you would need to think about nest boxes where the eggs rolled away from the hen as soon as they are layed.
Someone with better knowledge will be along soon I'm sure, good luck with the idea though.
Tim

Tim's right about the more than 50 hen thing. Funny that most smallholders I know only have 49!
You can find all the information about free-range stocking rates etc on the DEFRA website.
I wouldn't go for ex-battery hens but for point of lay. They are a lot less prone to problems and you'll obviously get more laying-life out of them. I know you mentioned the satisfaction side of things, though. With point of lay, you can keep them for 18 months or two years then sell them on to
people who want cheap layers. I find they are snapped up!
Good luck with your enterprise. I know what you mean about wanting to make money frrom your holding!
