This little hen is a very reliable layer. Hardly missing a day she lays a pure white egg. With its extraordinary good looks and great character it has a very strong following around the world. There has been much discussion about the origin of this breed, with records of crested birds from all around central Europe and Russia as early as 1600.
Even at a day old the shape of the crest can be seen. Extra care should be taken to keep Padoise free from lice and mites as they cannot preen their crests. It may be necessary to trim the feathers in front of the crest from time to time, to improve vision. A Padoise caught out in the rain with its crest hanging down is a sad sight, and can be dangerous as they can become hypothermic easily.
If kept with other birds they are often better with small or quiet breeds - the temptation to pluck out the crest feathers is usually too great for bigger or more active breeds!
